Stumptown!
To all you enterprising Portlanders, I’m going to be table sharing at Stumptown Comics Festival! I’m not sure where I’m going to be at exactly in the hall, but if you located the Periscope Studio group, I should be in there with those guys. I’ll be selling buttons, possibly commissions, and comics, including my new mini “The Devil and the Little Sister”.
So you can pick it up there! For those not going to the convention, the comic will be going online on Monday. I’m sure I’m going to be yammering on about the convention on Twitter all weekend, so if you want my up to the minute updates on it, you should keep an eye on that. DARLING BYRON has actually been around nearly as long as his parents. When I was designing Vicare and Elizabeth in about September of ‘09, I knew that I wanted them to have kids. Vicare didn’t have a last name at the time and when I was cycling through wikipedia, I found Ada Lovelace and her father, Lord Byron. Naming Vicare Byron felt too on the nose for me, so the name was regulated to what would be their first born son. So he’s been around for a while.
What’s changed since then? Well, he’s grown a whole personality. He started off as the cute kid with obviously not much agency and served more as a prop to the drama surrounding his parents. What I didn’t expect, however, when I aged him up to 18 was how much that naivety would stay. I didn’t at all expect Byron to end up as a proto Disney Prince at first- originally I wanted him to be more sly like his father- but he naturally took the progression into well meaning, but incredibly emotionally selfish princely teenage boy. It’s hard to tell how he’ll change in the future, but if I ever visit a teenage Byron in my own stories outside of Catalyst, I will more than likely try to keep the princely attributes.

Questions for artists and hobbyists
I’m working on a text about animestyle, influence and art style development. My main inspiration for my text is question of what exactly is anime style, and how does an artist develop their own style/expression, from this perspective.
These questions are mainly directed to all aspiring artists, hobbyists, as well as professionals, who enjoy anime and manga, (also gaming or other visual phenomena of Japanese pop-culture) or have been influenced and inspired by them. You can answer the questions even if you currently have nothing to do with doing art or Japanese pop-culture, but have past experience.
You don’t have to answer all questions, if you don’t want to.
You can state your profession/job status/education and age in the beginning, if you feel comfortable doing so.
1. Has anyone ever compared your art style to anime or manga style? Do you feel that the comparison was/is justified?
2. Has art teacher or professor ever told you to “stop drawing anime”? Did it affect you in any way?
3. Have you ever felt ashamed or embarrassed about your art style? Why?
4. Have you changed or attempted to change your art style, in hopes of getting better grades or employed? (Describe your style briefly, and what did you try to change?)
5. Do you think that anime / manga has had an negative impact in your art?
It’d also be fun to hear, what manga artists or animes have influenced your art the most, and why.
Additionally, if you happen to be an art teacher yourself, I’d love to hear your feelings about anime-inspired art. The term “anime-style” in itself is at this point a bit vague, but commonly used, so I’m hoping the definition will come along the way.
I’m not going to print the answers as they are and glue your nicknames to it, but I’m just looking for general direction of my text and some actual reference that I’m just not imagining things like “anime style” :) based on your answers I’m hoping to find new questions, and work on answers that could help artists in developing their style and expression.

Most days when I am in hardcore work mode, I am at risk of forgetting to eat all day. Some days, I don’t even think to order delivery food or something. The idea of automatic food showing up once a week, and healthy food at that, it exactly what I need. And I want to eat so much of the stuff on this site it’s not even funny. Get in my mouth immediately.
I signed the fuck up for this! HEY ARTISTS. You know how we have a tendency to get so wrapped up in what we’re doing that we completely forget to eat, and then only realize something is wrong when we’re pale and shaking and dizzy? FOOD. GOOD FOOD. DELIVERED WITHOUT YOU HAVING TO DO ANYTHING.
